About Khlong Saeng Wildlife Sanctuary

Khlong Saeng Wildlife Sanctuary covers approximately 1,155 square kilometers in Surat Thani Province, southern Thailand. The sanctuary features rugged terrain dominated by tropical rainforest, with dense evergreen and mixed deciduous forests and several mountain ranges. It is bisected by the Khlong Saeng River, which feeds into the Ratchaprapha Dam and Cheow Lan Lake, a stunning artificial reservoir known for its limestone karst formations rising dramatically from the water. The sanctuary was established in 1980 to protect a broad diversity of wildlife and habitats, supporting populations of endangered and rare species such as Asian elephants, gaurs, Malayan tapir, clouded leopards, and many primates and bird species. Khlong Saeng is part of a larger network of protected areas in the region linked to Khao Sok National Park. Visitor activities include jungle trekking, wildlife spotting, kayaking on Cheow Lan Lake, and boat tours to see the lake's limestone cliffs and floating campsites. The area attracts nature enthusiasts and photographers due to its rich biodiversity and picturesque landscapes. Access can be limited depending on season and weather, with the rainy season from May to October bringing heavy rains and higher river levels, while the dry season offers better conditions for hiking and boating. Facilities for visitors remain basic, emphasizing a wilderness experience with opportunities for off-the-beaten-path exploration.
